Marching band, known as the Falcon Regiment at BWHS, is an optional extracurricular activity open to all BWHS students. It is an award-winning band instructed by Duane Minnick, Director of Bands and Fine Arts Chair. The Falcon Regiment accepts all musicians, including guitarists and pianists. Auditions for Drumline and Falconaires are held in the spring. In addition to the marching performers, the Falcon Regiment includes a non-marching percussion section, called the “pit”. These members play the marimbas, xylophones, timapani, guitars, electronic piano, and other rhythm instruments. Our flag and rifle corps, the Falconaires, perform with the band and are an important part of the performances.

Over 130 students join the Falcon Regiment each year to participate in one of the largest and most well-respected marching bands in Loudoun County.  The Falcon Regiment also prepares students for college marching band which is, for many, one of the most memorable and worthwhile college experiences.

The Falcon Regiment performs at all home football games and participates in 4-5 regional competitions each year. The regiment also performs at Briar Woods to welcome students on the first day of school, during pep rallies and at other school events.

MARCHING BAND SEASON

The marching band season begins with Band Camp on August 1 and continues through the end of football season in November. For the first two weeks of August, camp runs two sessions daily, morning and evening, Monday through Friday. For the remaining weeks until school starts, camp runs evening sessions only, Monday through Friday. Participation at Band Camp is mandatory as time is very limited to complete the show in time for the start of football and competition season. After school starts, the band generally practices 2-3 times per week after school.

UNIFORMS

All band students are fitted with two uniforms, blue and white, that they wear for games and competitions. These uniforms remain at the school and are funded through Loudoun County Public Schools and the BWHS Music Booster Association. Students are responsible for purchasing two pairs of shoes, black and white, through the BWHS Music Boosters.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Parents are expected to volunteer to support the band program. Opportunities include chaperoning for practices, football games and competitions, helping move equipment as part of the pit crew, helping with pre-game dinners, or assisting with uniform fittings and dressing. Signup Genius is used to volunteer for the various events.

COST

Band fees may vary slightly year to year depending on show requirements and equipment needs but are approximately $135/year plus the cost of shoes and instrument rental, if needed for marching/pit students. Falconaires fees are $100/year plus costume and other costs. Students have the opportunity to offset some of these costs through participation in band fundraisers throughout the year.
