The BWHS band program includes three Concert Band groups: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band. These groups perform a variety of works from a challenging wind ensemble repertoire under the direction of Duane Minnick, Band Director and Fine Arts Chair. Auditions occur in May for positions in these music groups. The Wind Ensemble is the elite band and is comprised of students invited by Mr. Minnick based on individual musicianship and the musical composition of the ensemble. Concert Band is an elective Fine Arts course in the high school curriculum for which students receive grades and course credit. Band class is one block in the eight block schedule.

REHEARSALS

Band students attend their scheduled band block as well as before-school and after-school rehearsals as needed to prepare for concerts and assessments. Students are also expected to practice on their own daily.

PERFORMANCES

Concert bands perform at several events throughout the year:

  • Winter concert (December)
  • Spring concert (May)
  • Loudoun County Assessment (Spring)
  • Annual band trip (Winter/Spring; optional)
  • School events as requested

ATTIRE

All students are fitted with a tuxedo or gown to wear at all performances.  This attire remains at the school and is funded by Loudoun County Public Schools and the BWHS Music Boosters Association. Students supply their own black dress shoes.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Parents are encouraged to volunteer as chaperones at concerts and assessments and to help with fitting and dressing students for performances. Singup Genius is used to volunteer as needed.

COST

Band students are charged an annual band fee of $100. Parents are encouraged to join the BWHS Music Boosters Association for an additional fee of $25.  Fees cover the costs of concert attire, music, and equipment cleaning and repair. Additional costs for concert band include black dress shoes and instrument rental, if needed.
