Every year Briar Woods band students have the opportunity to take a trip perform the concert season repertoire in a unique setting. Since the opening of the school, the band has traveled to participate in many exciting performance including Carnegie Hall in New York City, New Year’s Parade in London, England, 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, HI, the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL and many more.

Our primary goal on the trip is student safety. We ensure that we have sufficient parent volunteers and that students are chaperoned at all times. Mr. Minnick has 20+ years of experience with band trips and has a strict set of guidelines to ensure student safety. Each trip has performance opportunities as well as cultural and entertainment activities. Over the past years, the band has cruised around New York City; enjoyed Universal Studios & Disney World; watched the Chicago, Boston, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestras perform; attended Broadway shows; and seen performances such as Cirque du Soleil, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and the Blue Man Group.

Mr. Minnick and the BWHS Music Boosters Association evaluates trip options based on performance opportunity, location, activities available, cost, parent and student interest, etc. In May, a decision is made as to which trip will be held the following year. Timing of the trips can vary but are usually sometime between December and April. These trips are a high point for the students and to date, have been very successful.

Trips are optional for all students. Costs for the trip are paid in full by the student and a payment schedule is set to ensure funds are received for committed expenses such as transportation, hotels, meals, performance fees, etc. Details of the trip are disseminated to students by September each year. A commitment form and deposit is required for a student to be initially included in the trip. All costs of the trip must be paid by the deadline in order for a student to participate.

Students must participate in extra trip rehearsals to prepare for the performance. These rehearsals are usually once each week from November until the trip.

Chaperones

We encourage parents to volunteer to chaperone these trips and enjoy an experience that they will never forget. Every year, we need numerous chaperones and volunteers to help with the band trip. Parents who wish to volunteer indicate this on their students’ commitment form. Chaperone costs are usually slightly less than the student cost and must be paid by the chaperones.
